About PurGen One

The PurGen One Project is a manufacturing facility proposed at the site of a former chemical plant in Linden, New Jersey. PurGen One will produce electricity and other hydrogen commodities through a process that will make it the cleanest fossil-fuel plant in the world.

The Project uses a process known as integrated gasification combined cycle or IGCC. In the PurGen One facility, coal arriving by rail or barge will be placed in enclosed silos prior to use. This facility will not burn coal, but rather will convert the coal to a synthetic gas, and remove sulfur and mercury from the gas prior to any combustion. Carbon dioxide will then be removed from the gas and safely stored offshore in a permanent repository. The remaining (mostly hydrogen) gas will be used to produce hydrogen commodities (such as urea, which is used for pollution control in cars, industrial plants and for fertilizer) and to power a combined cycle power plant that is practically identical to the one that is immediately next to the PurGen One site.

The air-cooled plant will have no water discharge or natural water intake. Process water for the carbon dioxide separation and other needs will be met by using available gray water from the Linden-Roselle wastewater plant, thereby eliminating a wastewater discharge to an important and sensitive urban estuary.

Carbon dioxide from the plant will be stored in a geologic repository that is 8000 feet below the ocean floor and more than seventy miles from shore, using a process that has been demonstrated for more than a decade at utility scale to be safe and permanent. This storage is based on the work of Professor Dan Schrag, a Harvard University Professor of Geochemistry and a world-renowned climate change mitigation expert. President Obama recently honored Dr. Schrag by appointing him to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

This is a project that will be subject to extensive regulatory scrutiny by federal, state, and local agencies over the next twelve months to ensure that PurGen One meets or exceeds all public health and the environmental protections.

We welcome public input throughout that process, and will keep this web site up-to-date so you can learn about public meetings and other opportunities to learn more about PurGen One.
